Christmas Stockings, A Family Legacy

Posted on

We are a few days away from Thanksgiving and the Christmas decorations are blossoming in the neighborhood.  I am resisting the urge to put up the Christmas decorations until after Thanksgiving.  I am a firm believer in waiting.  Thanksgiving deserves its own day, but I do understand there can be just cause for putting the Christmas decorations up before Thanksgiving. Although I haven’t done it yet, my reason for holding off is that is our daughter is expecting a child any day now, so I am not sure what the next couple of weeks will bring. In the next four weeks time will pass all too quickly!  So, why am I even discussing Christmas?  Let me explain.

Stockings are Family Legacy

Three years after my husband and I married and were expecting our first child, his great-aunt, Aunt Guzzie, needle pointed family stockings for each of us, including the family dog.  I was thrilled!   I treasure these stockings!  Why? Because they were handcrafted by a family member (it doesn’t hurt they are done with good taste and don’t look like they were purchased from a craft bazaar). Plus, they are original.  I believe you would be hard pressed to find some just like them.  Every year when it’s time to get out the Christmas decoration I hang the stockings first.  They are part of our family legacy.

This year, I’ve introduced my line of Christmas Stockings – kicking off with following Aunt Guzzie’s tradition and making them for my family. With the addition of each grandchild, I have given them a piece of our family legacy.  I don’t needlepoint (tried it, not my best skill), but I have used my machine applique skills to create each grandchild their own Christmas stocking.  While constructing the stockings I pray for my grandchild and their families.  I pray God will bless each one of them (an idea I got from a dear friend who prays for those she quilts for). I enjoy the time I spend creating each design, sewing it and then sharing it here, with you. Hopefully one day my grandchildren will look back and say “My Grammy made that just for me.  There is no other exactly like it.”  Then, I know my legacy will be fulfilled!

Personalized Christmas Stockings

Because I feel Christmas stockings are a special tradition to Christmas, ShilohMae – Custom Sewn Accessories has added Christmas stockings to our line of custom sewn accessories.  If you can sew, please feel inspired and create your own.  If not,  please contact ShilohMae – Custom Sewn Accessories to start your own family legacy/tradition.  Here are a few ideas to start your own Christmas stocking legacy, including the ones I’ve made for my grandchildren.  Enjoy!

Happy Thanksgiving!

Original Nursery Bedding

Posted on

The last couple of weeks I have worked on new nursery bedding for our future grandson.  Since our kids started announcing grandkids were in our future, I have had a new revival for sewing.  I want to share pictures of the nursery bedding I have sewn.  Each of these nursery coordinates were made using the same Simplicity pattern but look at how different each one turned out.

Shiloh’s “Flower” Nursery

The black, raspberry pink, white with green nursery bedding was made for my 1st granddaughter, Shiloh.  We knew we were having a girl, so nothing but something girlie (not frilly) for this nursery. Shiloh’s nursery pieces included a quilt, sheet, pillow, bed skirt, bumper pads, organizer and a cafe style curtains. Flower accents were machine embroidered on the quilt and pillow. Flowers were also added to the bumper pads and organizer.

Mae’s “Branching Out” Nursery

The brown, yellow and green nursery bedding was made for my 2nd granddaughter, Mae.  Not knowing the gender of this child before she arrived, we went with gender neutral fabric/theme. Don’t you just love the trees?  I used the little birds on the fabric to design the bird appliques.

Take special note of the mobile.  Shower attendee’s each made an animal from felt and embroidery floss. They had to come up with their own creation!  Then I suspended all the animals from an embroidery hoop, spacing each evenly apart to keep the mobile balanced.  We heard a few moans at the shower, but in the end I think everyone was happy to say they contributed to something Mae would look at each day.

To save room in this small nursery curtains were used as the closet doors. I layered the curtain fabrics on top of each other; brown, yellow and green fabric on the bottom. The brown tree fabric at the top leads your eye up in the room. Another decorating tip we used was to stretch different printed fabrics into assorted sizes of embroidery hoops.  Then, hang them on the wall!  Instantly gives the room a lot of color! One last fun accent to point out – the small animal pictures hanging on the wall, next to the curtain. They are felt puppets my daughter made for Mae. Her mom framed them and hung them on the narrow wall. Wish I could say that was my idea!

Future Custom Nursery Bedding…

I am working on my future grandson’s nursery bedding. I will post pictures after I give the bedding to my daughter.  I have used the same pattern, but WOW how different it looks.

I hope you have enjoyed my grandkids’ nursery bedding. I have had a blast creating them. Let me know if you or anyone you know is interested in custom nursery bedding! You can reach me at (816) 246-5118.

Please be sure and share any decorating tips you might have, or something you’ve made.  I can’t wait to hear from you!
